February 04, 2002 // 8:06 a.m. // Super Bowl commercials

Of course the most talked about thing the day after the Super Bowl on channels other than the sports channels are the commercials. This year, Pepsi spent far too much money and time on the one Britney Spears spot that sold her perhaps more than the product.

USA Today and viewers named the Annheiser-Busch "satin sheets" commercial as the best commercial. I disagree. Their other commercials were funnier, and this one just felt too much like a commercial you'd see debut any time of the year. It had that "it's July and I'm watching Blind Date" feel to it, not "it's February and I'm watching the best commercials of the year" feel.

I think my favorite commercial might have been the Lipton Iced Tea commercial featuring Danny DeVito and the puppets. Not only was it creative, but it took a subtle poke at his height.

I also really liked the M&M commercial where the guy regrets asking for a chocolate on his pillow.

The best of the rest included:

The E-Trade Monkey. A monkey performs a musical for a E-Trade commercial that bombs in the ratings. Because of this, the next day he's sent to Florida and blasted into space.

Charles Schwab retirement. While Barry Bonds is in the middle of batting practice, a Field of Dreams-like voice tells Barry to retire before he breaks the all-time homerun record. The voice belongs to Hank Aaron, the all-time homerun leader.

The Budweiser bar. Cedric the Entertainer helps his friend ask out a woman by feeding him lines which are repeated verbatim. When Cedric gets distraced by his beer arriving, he asks, "How Much?" which his friend promptly repeats to the woman.

Hot-jobs.com court stenographer interview. The interviewee for a perspective job recites everything the interviewer says back to her verbatim. We find out this is not a bad idea, as she's applying to be a court stenographer.

I also thought that the Visa race commercial, Blockbuster dancing hamsters, the Dale Earnhardt Jr. designated driver and Cadillac parking spot commercials were funny.

I couldn't stand any of the anti-smoking commercials or the Taco Bell commercials. Big waste of money.

All of these and more can be viewed aton the USA today website.

Final thing. It's also the final plug for my Friend Test. If you think you did badly, take it again. You might as well. I just wanted to know who took my Friend Test as Richard M. Nixon?
