October 27, 2002 // 10:02 p.m. // For some, eating cold turkey cures tobacco addiction

Right now, I'm recalling something from my english class by the most entertaining girl.

One of my classmates papers was on smoking and the high taxes paid on tobacco in some states. The teacher made a comment unrelated to the paper but related to the topic. She said, "one way of course to quit is the nicotine patch. The other is cold turkey."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the entertaining girl turn her head. She's known for...how do I say this nicely...not thinking about things fully before she speaks.

I anticipated a response from her. I expected it to be something a bit naive or something like her usual, in which she channels Betty White's character from Golden Girls.

She raised her hand. I had a feeling what she was going to say was going to make me laugh, so I balled up my hands into fists and covered my mouth with them.

Teacher: "Yes, Jessica?"

Jessica: "Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't know cold turkey was a cure for smoking."

I swear she said that.

There was a pause of about a half second before the class erupted into laughter. Even our young teacher who rarely smiles cracked a grin.

Jessica, thank you for entertaining us in a way that no one in that class can.
