November 13, 2002 // 3:10 p.m. // FM Nation: the aftermath

Did you all check out MTV's FM Nation last night? It was worse than I imagined. And what is worse than that? That I know people. just. like. that.

Case in point: On the show, a girl and her friends concocted a plan for her to kiss a boy she had a crush on. Neither she, nor this boy had ever kissed before. They had graduated high school a few months before. 18, and never kissed.

T.E.N.T. is a good example of this. Her first kiss was in a play at almost 17. Her first real kiss wasn't until she was 18.

And now, a brief glossary to follow should you catch that episode again:

94.9 ZHT - Local radio station, perhaps most popular with teens. It's just like Green Day. Once you turn 16, they're no longer cool. You can count on your fix of Britney, Justin Destiny's Child and all the boy bands here.

Fun Dome - Will always be the 49th Street Galleria to me. I can't speak too badly about this place. After all, I was here only two weeks ago, and have spent many many weekends mini golfing and laughing at the Michael Jackson impersonator on the karaoke machine. I've known many high schoolers who go on dates here, which is perfect I suppose, because you can bowl, bungee, golf, laser tag and play air hockey and video games 'til your heart's content. Fun Dome. It makes so much sense that two 18 year olds who had never been kissed would be here. It's more than a little surprising to see the very tables and building you were at only weeks before on national television.

What did you kids do when you graduated high school? Drink? Party? I did neither. I spent the hours between midnight and four a.m. at the Fun Dome with 200 other graduates and yearbooks. I must say, the photos from that night did rock.

Ritz Classic - This is the bowling alley where the girls saw Warrant, and the bowling alley we frequently spent time at, until two games of bowling became more than ten dollars. Now we go here. It's always crowded here too, because it is *the* bowling alley here in Utah. You never know who you'll run into. Sometimes it's an old friend. Other times it's a crush who absolutely makes you want to leave.

Heck - Substitute for "hell." Commonly used locally in sentences like, "oh my heck!", "heck yeah!" and "that was hecka crazy!"

The whole friendship/relationship/bridge thing - A spin on the unique way we ask to dances here.

"Go out for ice cream" - What I did after two dance dates and was going to do after another. Going out for ice cream is pretty big here. That, and your date ordering a heaping bowl of common household fruits. Or is that just me?
