April 27, 2002 // 1:40 p.m. // JournalistsPssh

Call me crazy, but when I watch the news, I like for my journalists to get things right.

This afternoon, I had my first opportunity to watch a short less than two minute story put together by CNN just hours after her death. Now I understand it's short notice, but this is CNN. If we can't believe them, who can we believe? Certainly not FOX. If Fox news isn't a contradiction in terms, then I don't know what is.

Here's proof it's the little things that bug me.

They emphasized the wrong word, calling her, "Left Eye" rather than "Left Eye.They also said that after she burned down former fiance Andre Rison's house, their relationship fizzled. It did, but they were supposed to be married last July. The final point was that her solo album failed to gain any attention in the US. It's because it wasn't released in the US. Had it been released with promotion, it likely still would not have sold and critics didn't like it, but I think it's safe to say that it would sell better than it did internationally.

They did the same thing with Aaliyah. Despite everyone mispronouncing her name (AH-lee-ah) they also had their facts wrong about her career.

One more thing. Say what you want about how awful of a show 106 & Park is on BET, but whenever a rising star passes (no matter how exploitive a show like this may be) they still do it better than anybody else. Yesterday's 90 minute tribute to Lisa was touching, and provided fans a stroll down memory lane from the safe sex days to the futuristic videos from Fanmail. Her band mates calling in was the most wrenching part of the show, discussing how much she meant. Letting Suge Knight get the last word in was ridiculous. For some reason, I doubt Lisa was big on the whole new image thing.

It's another day of basketball on NBC. Years ago as a huge basketball fan, I'd love this. But there's something about watching your local team clawing just to make the playoffs unsettling.
